We depend on
pollinators
for over a third of the fruits and vegetables we eat.
What motivated me to film their behavior was something that I asked my scientific advisers: "What motivates the pollinators?"
They have to try and attract
pollinators

Now you can imagine that if nectar is such a valuable thing and expensive for the plant to produce and it attracts lots of pollinators, then, just as in human sex, people might start to deceive.

are attracted to plants for their nectar, and in the process, a bee will visit some flowers and pick up some pollen, or that male kind of sperm counterpart, along the way, and then travel to different flowers, and eventually an apple, in this case, will be produced.
And this is a route of exhibition gardens, and edible towpaths, and bee-friendly sites, and the story of pollinators, and it's a route that we designed that takes people through the whole of our town, past our cafes and our small shops, through our market, not just to and fro from the supermarket, and we're hoping that, in changing people's footfall around our town, we're also changing their behavior.

Well, looking at honey DNA, we can see what plants are good for

that have deep roots, that can secure the land, and together, everybody can participate.
I know it sounds crazy, but think about this: a new Provincetown, a new hometown, a place that might be familiar that's also good for

for a stable food system, when we're thinking about the future.
These long flower stalks keep certain insects away from the carnivore’s traps— a way of separating

And in fact, there is now a red list of

that we're worried have disappeared, and on top of that list are a lot of these kleptoparasites, but also these bumblebees.
And so it's not just honeybees that are in trouble, but we don't understand these native

or all those other parts of our community.
So we could talk about sea turtles or

or any of these super important species that are also cute.
If released into the environment, they could potentially alter food chains, eradicate beneficial organisms such as pollinators, and disrupt indigenous agro-ecological practices and cultures.
Rather than merely altering the crops that farmers bring to harvest, biotechnology corporations will now try to control the genetic makeup of every component in the agricultural ecosystem, from the
pollinators
to the weeds and pests.
Natural systems also provide natural purification systems for air and water, supply
pollinators
for agriculture, mediate our climate, and recycle the elements upon which our life-support systems depend.
