We actually know the fishes better than we do any other group in the ocean other than

And from that, we actually calculate that we know about 16,500

species and there are probably another 1,000 to 4,000 left to go.
And hence, the enormous role that a

protected area can play.
Because with

protected areas, we actually recreate the past.
That is for people who can see a
marine
protected area and who can benefit from the insight that it provides, which enables them to reset their baseline.
This could have irreversible global-scale impacts on

life and food webs.
In the next ten minutes, we will immerse ourselves in an amazing and beautiful
marine
world that's very often overlooked.
What you see here are
marine
bacteria buzzing about and exploring other members of the
marine
food web.
But luckily, we rarely get sick from that seawater, because most
marine
microbes are working for us, not against us.
It's called, "Prochlorococcus," and this is oceans' oxygen-producing powerhouse and, I might argue, one of the most amazing discoveries of recent
marine
microbiology.
I see our relationship with
marine
microbes as parallel in many ways to the relationship we have with microbes in our gut.
But we may be less aware of the connection we have with
marine
microbes and the physical discomforts we can feel when those communities change.
So while most
marine
microbes are indeed helping us, there do remain plenty that are not.
If you take one idea away from my talk today, let it be this: we have an incredibly important relationship with these
marine
microbes that have very large-scale consequences, and we're just barely beginning to understand what that relationship looks like and how it may be changing.
I work to find ways that cutting-edge technologies like this can help make the unseen seeable, to see
marine
bacteria in action and learn how they behave.
It provides a surface for things in the ocean, and this surface, which is covered by seaweeds and other organisms in the ocean, will become enhanced
marine
habitat so it increases biodiversity.
And finally, we wanted to see where we could look at what the impact of this structure would be in the
marine
environment, and we set up a field site at a place called Moss Landing
Marine
Lab in Monterey Bay, where we worked in a harbor to see what impact this would have on
marine
organisms.
So we wanted to also investigate what would be the impact of this system in the
marine
environment, and I mentioned we set up this experiment at a field site in Moss Landing
Marine
Lab.
Well, we found of course that this material became overgrown with algae, and we needed then to develop a cleaning procedure, and we also looked at how seabirds and
marine
mammals interacted, and in fact you see here a sea otter that found this incredibly interesting, and would periodically work its way across this little floating water bed, and we wanted to hire this guy or train him to be able to clean the surface of these things, but that's for the future.
I mentioned we looked at birds and
marine
mammals and looked at basically the environmental impact of the system, and finally we looked at the economics, and what I mean by economics is, what is the energy required to run the system?
What are we going to do with all this plastic that we're going to need to use in our
marine
environment?
