Examples
include
the zither music, the dispassionate and unsympathetic characters, the lack of concern demonstrated by the protagonist concerning his danger (denying the viewer real suspense), the absence of "preaching" about the horrors of post-War Europe, the refusal to show the film's climax, and shots that make you want to look at the architecture rather than the people.

include
the completely wasted Peter Cook, the annoying Brenda Vacarro, a embarrassed Mia Farrow, as Kara's mother, the very attractive Hart Bochner that was quite good under trying circumstances and Peter O'Toole, who's always fun to watch when he overacts.
But, other methods of execution
include
used an ax splitting the forehead, end of a knife stabbing a hole in the neck, a sliced throat, heart removed from a chest with it beating in the killer's hand(..not elaborated in grisly detail, the director uses sounds, only displaying the beating heart), the back of a victim's head crushed repeatedly into the floor during a scuffle, and a vicious attack with a meat tenderizer.
(During a scene of 'death' pictures) Comments include, " You will witness visions so incredibly graphic that your brain will surely comprehend the ghastly images it will receive!". A few highlights include: Curtis gyrating around to canned disco music as he pours himself a beer into a wine goblet, Stevens attempting to keep a straight face in the light of her ludicrous role (she eventually exits the film altogether without explanation), Sothern's home being trashed, yet her false eyelashes never move a tad (she barely registers in this film at all, a person would have to hit "pause" to get a decent look at her!), surgeon Cedar being forced to cut himself with his own scalpel by the unborn ancient hobgoblin, a nod to the 70's disaster cycle in which a hospital office shakes and rattles as if it were unused footage from "Earthquake" and the heinous space effects when Strasberg's room becomes an inter-dimensional playground (complete with her doffing her hospital gown and taking on the creature TOPLESS!)
Even so, it all comes down to the script, which treats the terrible malady we call schizophrenia with an authenticity beyond what I have seen in other films ( I do

Amongst some of the worst and most vile clips seen in the film
include
the actual on-air news footage of a disgruntled husband shooting his news reporter wife to death live on Spanish television; a helpless and innocent pig who get's literally roasted to death in a slow and unbelievably sadistic fashion via a blow torch by a group of scientists obviously doing what would be considered now (and even back then) illegal animal experimentation; and a really gross and totally uncensored male-to-female sex-change operation that goes above and beyond anything you might have otherwise seen on TLC's infamous surgery shows!

include

all the scenes that take place at the CIA (the concluding dialog between JK Simmons and David Rasche is a killer) and the first phone conversation between Pitt and Malkovich is deadly, too.
