to learn from one another, to experience a garden as a community experience.
I was in the Netherlands early this year and was absolutely amazed by the amount of bikes on the road; 26 percent of all trips taken in the Netherlands are by bicycle, and it's gotten me thinking: How do we get that happening in terms of food and
gardens?
How would we get 26 percent of all produce coming from backyard
gardens?
But if you take into consideration that at the peak of the victory garden movement last century, 40 percent of all produce was coming from
gardens.
Why not? (Applause) In terms of other things that we need to be doing, we need to move down to the local level and we need to make sure that
gardens
are legal.
We need to figure out also new ways of getting people into gardens, people who don't have yards.
OK? (Applause) And I'm going to challenge the women to come up with really clever, creative ways of getting guys into the gardens, too.
But beyond that, I think we need to reexamine the infrastructure that we have in place for
gardens.
Food is at its best when it's delicious but shared as part of a community, and I think that
gardens
can get some of that community vibe back as well.
The bees in Boston on the rooftop of the Seaport Hotel, where we have hundreds of thousands of bees flying overheard right now that I'm sure none of you noticed when we walked by, are going to all of the local community
gardens
and making delicious, healthy honey that just tastes like the flowers in our city.
That's a big problem, because what's going to pollinate all of the
gardens
and the produce locally?
Through her, my kids, the most disenfranchised and marginalized, were able to roll out 100
gardens
to New York City public schools.
And in his day, a million dollar

and incredible installations.
Corner row railway, station car park, front of a health center, people's front gardens, and even in front of the police station.
And this is a route of exhibition gardens, and edible towpaths, and bee-friendly sites, and the story of pollinators, and it's a route that we designed that takes people through the whole of our town, past our cafes and our small shops, through our market, not just to and fro from the supermarket, and we're hoping that, in changing people's footfall around our town, we're also changing their behavior.
It seems that during my childhood, the blooms from my mother's

have healed all the way from her halo to the roots on the soles of our feet.
Since then, I have planted her

through art installations throughout the world, in countries of the people that I meet.
When our

are balanced with care, we can harvest the beauty of living a life of grace.
