And what makes a robot
soft
is first of all its compliant body, which is made of materials or structures that can undergo very large deformations, so no more rigid links, and secondly, to move them, we use what we call distributed actuation, so we have to control continuously the shape of this very deformable body, which has the effect of having a lot of links and joints, but we don't have any stiff structure at all.
So you can imagine that building a
soft
robot is a very different process than stiff robotics, where you have links, gears, screws that you must combine in a very defined way.
In
soft
robots, you just build your actuator from scratch most of the time, but you shape your flexible material to the form that responds to a certain input.
OK, but let's see some cool examples of
soft
robots.
Or a robotic fish, which swims like a real fish does in water simply because it has a
soft
tail with distributed actuation using still air pressure.
This was actually one of the first projects developed in this new field of
soft
robots.
With my previous research group in Europe, we developed this
soft
camera robot for surgery, which is very different from a classic endoscope, which can move thanks to the flexibility of the module that can bend in every direction and also elongate.
And here you see the
soft
robot in action, and it just goes inside.
But sometimes, a surgical procedure can even be done using a single needle, and in Stanford now, we are working on a very flexible needle, kind of a very tiny
soft
robot which is mechanically designed to use the interaction with the tissues and steer around inside a solid organ.
We have robots that have to deal with
soft
structures, so this poses new and very challenging questions for the robotics community, and indeed, we are just starting to learn how to control, how to put sensors on these very flexible structures.
In a region famous for the soft, porous Loess Plateau soil, there lived until recently an estimated 40 million people in these houses underground.

soft
variables reflected in their aphorisms, actually affect longevity?
How do the hard and the

The
soft

Imagine a future where clothing is stiff and
soft
where you need it, when you need it, for optimal support and flexibility, without ever causing discomfort.
And we've discovered optimality is: where the body is stiff, the synthetic skin should be soft, where the body is soft, the synthetic skin is stiff, and this mirroring occurs across all tissue compliances.
My interface is
soft
and compliant.
This exoskeleton becomes stiff and
soft
in just the right areas of the running cycle, to protect the biological joints from high impacts and degradation.
In a recent trial we just wrapped up at the Media Lab, one of our patients, a U.S. veteran who has been an amputee for about 20 years and worn dozens of legs, said of one of our printed parts, "It's so soft, it's like walking on pillows, and it's effing sexy."
Jesse Owens, on the other hand, ran on cinders, the ash from burnt wood, and that
soft
surface stole far more energy from his legs as he ran.
As of the end of last year, 1,314 men had run under four minutes in the mile, but like Jesse Owens, Sir Roger Bannister ran on
soft
cinders that stole far more energy from his legs than the synthetic tracks of today.
Most of the password meters were actually effective, and the dancing bunny was very effective too, but the password meters that were the most effective were the ones that made you work harder before they gave you that thumbs up and said you were doing a good job, and in fact we found that most of the password meters on the Internet today are too
soft.

soft
and limber.
It shows a cockroach moving over incredibly rough terrain without tipping over, and it's able to do this because its legs are a combination of rigid materials, which is what we traditionally use to make robots, and
soft
materials.

soft
materials in very, very small mechanisms.
