It would have been tempting for the writer/director to

some sort of exposition of his childhood and/or his relationship with his mother and other women, either as flashback or monologue.

female chauvinist perspectives, emasculated or violent male characters (if there are any men to speak of), long stagnant takes shot on digital video, and an aggressive tendency toward unresolved endings.

I realize that this isn't the first movie to

these icons of our society in danger, but we never really believe any of this is real and that's the problem here.
The supporting players just seem to be along for the ride and don't add much even though they

a few talented people like Samuel L. Jackson, Willem Dafoe, and Scott Speedman(who was great in the Underworld movies but is horrible here).
Although I prefer sci-fi films more than watching these kind of thrillers which

less action but the sense that makes us believe in the doubts is even enjoyable in some parts..
Even some of the widely acclaimed directors in the genre, like Dario Argento or Sergio Martino, never managed to

this much genuine tension in their masterpieces.
Some of the performances are lively (Everett as King Charles is the high point), but most are one-dimensional,

that of both Fairfaxes (Dougray Scott and Olivia Williams).

"Donkey Punch" is another movie in the sub-SUB-genre I have personally categorized and labeled the "trouble on a yacht" genre (other such films

Dead Calm", "Open Water 2", and "Visitors" or anything that predominantly takes place in, on, or around a f!cking yacht...) and it certainly isn't anything remotely compelling.
The drama and the documentary elements aren't separated... while it could have chosen to be either a full-on drama(no doubt evoking more emotions from the audience) or a genuine documentary(most likely being able to

even more information about the time), it chose an interesting path, involving both.
The movie at times severely exaggerates the effects of marijuana to

visual hallucinations that are more comparable to psychedelic drugs like LSD.
For decades Hollywood mindlessly insisted that movies

musical numbers and romantic sub-plots that nobody could possibly care less about, as anybody who's ever watched a Marx Brothers movie can relate to.
