The only way they're going to lift themselves out of energy poverty is by adapting

that are more efficient, that are less expensive, that are better for human health, better for the environment and that are more productive.
So it turns out that those

and technologies exist, and this is an example of that.
The kerosene and charcoal value chains already figured this out: those

are ubiquitous across the entire country.
You see, fire made us human; fossil
fuels
made us modern.
Those fossil
fuels
have built our civilization.
So to get mobility without oil, to phase out the oil, we can get efficient and then switch
fuels.
These observations about the finiteness of easily accessible, local, secure fossil fuels, is a motivation for saying, "Well, what's next?
What is life after fossil
fuels
going to be like?
Shouldn't we be thinking hard about how to get off fossil fuels?"
And when people talk about life after fossil
fuels
and climate change action, I think there's a lot of fluff, a lot of greenwash, a lot of misleading advertising, and I feel a duty as a physicist to try to guide people around the claptrap and help people understand the actions that really make a difference, and to focus on ideas that do add up.
So here's a question: Imagine if we said, "Oh yes, we can get off fossil
fuels.
There are other options for generating power as well, which don't involve fossil
fuels.
We need big action, because we get 90 percent of our energy from fossil fuels, and so you need to push hard on most, if not all, of these levers.
But what
fuels
this?
Some years ago, I set out to try to understand if there was a possibility to develop biofuels on a scale that would actually compete with fossil
fuels
but not compete with agriculture for water, fertilizer or land.
We'd be growing oysters and things that would be producing high value products and food, and this would be a market driver as we build the system to larger and larger scales so that it becomes, ultimately, competitive with the idea of doing it for
fuels.
It has the power, potentially, to replace our fossil fuels, to revolutionize medicine, and to touch every aspect of our daily lives.
And that money
fuels
research, and that research will get us to a cure.
Above it, let's place water and oxygen, and beside it, some flammable
fuels.

are made of just hydrogen and carbon.
Maybe knowing this chemistry will make that reality easier to accept for some people, I don't know, but these molecules are not just fossil

Now there's no question about it at all: we will only solve the problem of replacing fossil

What we are doing globally is causing climate change as much as, I believe, fossil fuels, and maybe more than fossil
fuels.
And if this continues, we are unlikely to be able to stop the climate changing, even after we have eliminated the use of fossil
fuels.

You know, who is going to say that we cracked this thing of the dependence on fossil fuels, with all that being held to ransom by rogue regimes, and so on.
I mean global warming certainly is a massive threat to mankind and we are putting a lot of time and energy into, A, trying to come up with alternative

and, B, you know, we just launched this prize, which is really a prize in case we don't get an answer on alternative fuels, in case we don't actually manage to get the carbon emissions cut down quickly, and in case we go through the tipping point.
